Responsible Body: London Borough of Bexley
The London Borough of Bexley has a shared vision with all stakeholders that Bexley children should be educated locally wherever practicable to keep children in the community. The London Borough of Bexley has identified a gap in local provision for children with complex needs (high functioning ASD and SEMH) which is resulting in children being placed out of borough. As a result, in March 2019, the authority was successful in its bid to the Department for Education to open a new Special Free School.

The creation of further places for children with SEN within the Borough is likely to help to ensure that pupils with special educational needs will be able to attend a suitable local school provision and reduce the number of cases of pupils being placed either in an out of borough provision or in the independent sector. This would not only reduce the overall costs of such placements but also reduce the extra traveling burden for some pupils with SEN.
The London Borough of Bexley would self-deliver this project on behalf of the Department for Education.
